Population Data is at the core of the national statistical system in Lao PDR. UNFPA works closely with the Lao Statistics Bureau and relevant partners to produce and analyze population data, encouraging utilization of data and statistics for planning and monitoring purposes focusing on the National Socio-Economic Development Plan, sectoral policies , the ICPD Programme of Action and the Sustainable Development Goals.
In the context of rapid demographic transition in Laos, UNFPA provides strategic support to government partners to effectively implement and monitor the National Population and Development Policy (2019-2030) in a gender-responsive manner, prioritising youth empowerment, especially addressing barriers faced by young girls in accessing equitable opportunities and services, in order for the country to reap its potential for a Demographic Dividend.
We implement our program through:
- Promoting evidence-based policy development to strengthen the country’s statistical capacity to use population data, evidence and advocacy for informing policy frameworks that focus on addressing inequalities.
- Strengthening data coordination for development among statistical data producers and users, including Government agencies, UN partners, research institutions, academia, and civil society organizations.
- Support improvement of the national statistical system and institutional capacities to carry out Population and Housing Census, statistical surveys and improve CRVS system, using new technologies and innovation.
- Support evidence-based advocacy and decision-making through analysis of population dynamics, producing policy briefs in the areas of SRH and health financing, education and demographic dividend, and vulnerable groups, highlighting the rights of those who are left furthest behind.
