Vientiane, May 3, 2017 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) hosted a reception on the occasion of the First National Family Planning Conference in Lao PDR and inauguration of the new UNFPA office at the UN House in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The UN House in Lao PDR supports increased coordination and collaboration among UN agencies and it’s located near Patuxay on Lane Xang Avenue, Ban. Hatsady, Chanthabouly District, Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR.

The Vice Minister of Ministry of Planning and Investment, government officials, ministers and the diplomatic community were among those to attend the inauguration reception.

“I thank the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms Kaarina Immonen for your commitment to welcome UNFPA to this building. This is a new era for UNFPA in Lao PDR.” said Frederika Meijer, UNFPA Representative in Lao PDR.

This very solid and grand structure is a powerful symbol of the strong partnership between the Government of Lao PDR and the United Nations.

Many members of the UN family working with the Government and people of Lao PDR are already based in the UN House including: IFAD, IMF, IOM, UNAIDS, UNCDF, UNDP, UNV, UNIDO, UN-Habitat, UN Women, in addition to the UN Coordination Office, UNDSS, and the UN Dispensary.

In her special message for the event, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms Kaarina Immonen said: “I am delighted UNFPA has moved into this lovely building, joining a large part of the UN family. As the UN Secretary-General has said at its inauguration, this UN House is a symbol of close partnership – between the Government and the UN, and between the UN agencies. I would like to use this opportunity to reiterate our deep gratitude to the Government for accommodating us in this manner.”
