Vientiane, Lao PDR.- Close to 1000 persons with disabilities from Vientiane gathered since early morning on December 6 in Patouxay Monument to participate in a mini-marathon organized on occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated globally on December 3rd under the theme "Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all".
Vientiane, Lao PDR.- Close to 1000 persons with disabilities from Vientiane gathered since early morning on December 6 in Patouxay Monument to participate in a mini-marathon organized on occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated globally on December 3rd under the theme "Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all".
The activity, organized by the Lao Rehabilitation Center with support from UNFPA, was chaired by his Excellency, Professor Dr. Bounkong Sihavong, Deputy Minister of Health. Different organizations working for people with disabilities in the country joined the event.
"Being responsive to the needs of people with physical or mental challenges empowers them to participate fully in societal life, including raising a family and being part of families, communities and contributing to a nations development. In Lao PDR we can make a positive change in the lives of our brothers and sisters who are physically and or mentally challenged with a disability" said Dr. Esther Muia, UNFPA Representative.
"Today, and forever, let us together commit to ensure that we put more effort and resources to facilitate our people who have any form of disability to live their dreams, ----be fulfilled --- and contribute as productive members of the society" She added.
