Vientiane, 1 October 2014 – Following a series of activities to mark the World Population Day 2014 under the theme “Investing in Young People”, a student debate session was conducted by the Faculty of Social Science, National University of Laos (NUoL) in collaborated with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) , in the afternoon of 1 October 2014 at the hall of NUoL .
The debate under the topic “Youth Development” provided students an opportunity to strengthen skills on research, analysis and public speaking. This would also increase awareness and understanding among students toward the youth and development issues as well as providing an opportunity for them to express their views on the issues that relevant to them.
The topics for the debate consist of youth and participation, sexual reproductive health education, and sexual reproductive health services. Student representatives from 6 faculties such as Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Management, Faculty of Letter , Faculty of Environment, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Natural Sciences.
In order to better understand the objectives and the debate topics, a debate preparation meeting was conducted on 24th September at the meeting room of NUoL where the students and teachers learned about the situation of the ASRH in Lao PDR.
The student debate session was chaired by Dr. Hassan Motahshami, UNFPA Representative, and Associate Prof. Dr. Khamany Soulideth, Vice Dean of Faculty of Social Science. The session also attended by 300 university and secondary education students.
