Lao Youth and Adolescent Development Strategy 2021-2030
According to the 4th National Population and Housing Census 2015, there is a total of 3,298,643 adolescents and youth aged between 10 and 35 years in the country. It is estimated that 64% of the total adolescents and youth population reside in rural areas. Approximately 12% of these adolescents and youth reside in remote areas without road access. They face multiple challenges and vulnerabilities, such as not being able to attend any form of education and lack of access to information and social services. In addition, many youths in rural areas are exposed to early marriage, unplanned pregnancy and child labor (LSB, 2015).
International Day of Girl Child 2021 - Brief Report
The first International Day of Girl Child in Laos PDR was led by the Ministry of Planning and Investment in 2016 under the theme: ‘Investing in Adolescent Girls for Sustainable Development of Lao PDR’. Since then, the celebration continues to be hosted by different government entities with a new theme each year. This year, Noi celebrated her 15th Anniversary. It was organized by Lao Youth Union and UNFPA with support from various partners: UN agencies, INGOs, CSOs and private sector partners. The theme of the celebration was ‘Digital Generation: Technology and Innovations as Accelerators of Girls’ Bodily Autonomy’.
Adolescent Research Day 2021 - Brief Report
The first adolescent research day in 2016 focused on SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). The second ARD was organized in 2017 focusing on SDG 2 (End Hunger) with the theme ‘Nutrition and Reproductive Health from a Life-Cycle Perspective’. The third “Social protection for Among Adolescents-Issues, Challenges and Way Forward”. The 4th “Gender Equality Research Evidence in the context of the 9th Socio-Economic Development plan. The 5th “Adolescent and Development Adolescent - Removing their barriers towards a healthy and fulfilling life”. And this year the 6th Adolescent Research Day was organized on 15 October 2021 at the Clown Plaza Hotel, Vientiane, Lao PDR under the theme Protection of Adolescent Health and Development in the Context of COVID-19.

The various aspects of their health and well-being (psychological, social, developmental and sexual) are impacted by a myriad of factors such as technology, poverty and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

As highlighted in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s 9th National Socio-Economic Development Plan NSEDP (2021-2025), civil registration offers much potential in realizing our shared commitments to “Leave No One Behind” and vital statistics can provide key insights into population dynamics and development progress.
Such insights are important to ensure that public social service policies respond to population needs and provide individuals with essential legal documents required to secure identity, nationality and civil rights. While the SDG indicator 16.9 “legal identity for all, including birth registration, by 2030” is amongst the localized SDG indicators in Laos, much remains to be done.

Adolescent Health and Development Webinar Series Report
Adolescents as a group of individuals are often overlooked in health related discussions, despite the need to tackle the health challenges they face during a crucial period of transition from childhood to adulthood. The various aspects of their health and well-being (psychological, social, developmental, and sexual) are impacted by a myriad of factors such as technology, poverty and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. With a view to discussing these important issues and exploring some of the different aspects they impinge on, the SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute (SDGHI) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Lao PDR collaborated to organise a 4–part webinar series. The 4 webinars highlighted the key challenges and approaches in adolescent health and well-being in the region by: 1) looking at the impact of COVID-19 on adolescents, 2) understanding the implications of the rapidly evolving digital environment on their health, 3) examining the key approaches to sexual and reproductive health, 4) looking at poverty as an underlying determinant that increases the vulnerability and health risks of this demographic. It brought together speakers working in different areas of adolescent health and development from various countries in the region and provided a holistic picture of how the different aspects explored intersect and influence the overall health and well-being of adolescents.
UNFPA Laos COVID-19 Response Report
COVID-19 pandemic has undermined the progress made in sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. UNFPA Laos responded quickly to the situation by supporting the government in the COVID-19 response focusing on the continuity of sexual and reproductive health information and services provision and ensuring women and girls’ rights are protected. We support the government through policy dialogues, capacity building, knowledge sharing, service provision, population data, and advocacy
Demographic Change For Development Lao People’s Democratic Republic 2030
The study shows that Laos is at the cusp of a potential for realising a demographic dividend: accelerated economic growth within one generation when a country has more people of working age than dependents, if those in the working age are educated, skilled, empowered and employed. Thus, the urgency to invest in youth and adolescents who will join the working age group now to 2030. Using this analysis, informed decisions can be made on use of limited resources to accelerate socio-economic development.
