National Goals and Targets in Population and Reproductive Health

Progress on Key Indicators

UNFPA assists the Lao PDR Government in actions to achieve the following Millennium Development Goals and goals from the 20-year Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, and its review by a special session of the UN General Assembly in 1999:

• Ensure that 60 percent of primary health care and family planning facilities offer a wide range of services by 2005, that 80 percent do so by 2010; and achieve universal access to reproductive health care, including family planning and sexual health services, by 2015
  
  
• Reduce the unmet need for contraceptives by half by 2005; by 75 percent by 2010; and by 100 percent by 2015
  
  
• Provide skilled birth attendants at 40 percent of births by 2005
  
  
• Guarantee that 90 percent of 15–24 year olds have access to information and services to help them avoid HIV infection by 2005; and by 2015 halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS
  
  
• Halve the 2000 maternal mortality rate by 2015
  
  
• Halve the 1990 illiteracy rate for women and girls by 2005; enroll 90 percent of boys and girls in primary school by 2010, and ensure that by 2015, all children of both sexes can complete a full course of primary schooling
  
  
• Eliminate gender disparities in both primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and at all levels of education no later than 2015
  
  
• Reduce under-five mortality by two-thirds on 1990 levels by 2015
  
  
• Halve the proportion of the population whose daily income is less than one dollar a day by 2015, on 1990 levels
  
  
• Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources.
